Tory Nyhaug, of Coquitlam BC finished in 7th place at the Supercross Finals in Norway on Saturday (April 14 2012). Nyhaug was on his way to a third place finish when Liam Phillips of Great Britain collided into Nyhaug on the second jump in the final stretch. Nyhaug got up from the crash and finished the race uninjured.

“I am really happy about my positioning today, and for the fact that I have been in two finals this year. Of course I am a little bit bummed about the crash in the final straight as it could have been my first career podium,” said Nyhaug.

Nyhaug will continue his Olympic preparations as planned.

American rider Conner Fields posted the fastest time in the time trials on Friday (April 13 2012) and went on to win his third straight Supercross victory. Photo of Fields and Nyhaug on Saturday.

This exciting race series will see the best BMX riders in the world at the Abbotsford BMX Track September 14-15, 2012 for breathtaking sporting action. This will be the first time that Canada hosts a BMX World Cup.

The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Abbotsford will feature the best female and male BMX riders from over 30 different countries; many of whom will have competed the month prior at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The World Cup uses the same Olympic format and offers a total prize purse of $150,000. Supercross BMX garnered significant television ratings when the sport made debut as an Olympic event at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series is broadcast around the globe to millions of viewers.

A UCI Supercross World Cup requires the use of an Olympic standard BMX track, something that until recently did not exist in Canada. That was until B2ten, a private sector group that invests in the success of Canadian athletes on the world stage, agreed to provide a substantial portion of the funding to build an Olympic standard start hill at the Abbotsford BMX track. Keith Ryan, Chief Executive Officer for Cycling BC, commented, “Securing the rights to host this great event was made possible because of the amazing financial support received from B2ten. Cycling BC and the Abbotsford BMX Club shared a vision to build an Olympic standard facility that could meet the needs of local BMX riders as well as support the development of current and future Olympians. Importantly, the City of Abbotsford has a great passion for sport and has been very supportive of BMX in their community, so we also had a great location for an Olympic track. In reality though we were a few years away from realizing that vision until B2ten came onboard.”.

Canadian BMX fans will have the opportunity see Canadian Tory Nyhaug compete in a World Cup on home soil for the first time. Nyhaug, who hails from Coquitlam, finished the 2011 season ranked 5th overall in the 2011 UCI World Cup Series.“BMX races are often won by the smallest of margins with their outcomes determined by the athlete who best combines the fastest start sprint with technical skill, upper body strength and a healthy dose of daring.” said B2ten’s Miller. “Tory Nyhaug is a fine example of a young talent on the cusp of stepping up with the very best in the world”.

The bid for this event was also supported by a sport-hosting grant provided by the Government of British Columbia. “Cycling BC has been a fantastic partner with the Province in making sure B.C. families have access to safe and high-quality sporting opportunities like the World Cup BMX,” said Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “The Province provided $5,000 through Hosting BC because sport helps build local economies and encourages our youth to become active.”

“This successful World Cup bid could not have been achieved without the support of the Provincial Government and we remain very appreciative of their ongoing commitment to the sport of cycling.” Said Wayne Pomario, President of Cycling BC. “This event will help promote participation in BMX racing in Abbotsford as well as at our other affiliated tracks in Surrey, Maple Ridge, North Vancouver and Kamloops.

“We are thrilled to have Canada host its first ever World Cup in BMX,” said Greg Mathieu, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Cycling Association. “We congratulate Cycling BC on their successful bid.

“We are certainly very excited to bring the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup finals to Canada for the first time and Abbotsford will be a great host” says Johan Lindstrom, CEO of Global SX Events Inc (GSX) who oversees the general management of the UCI (International Cycling Union) BMX Supercross World Cup. “With the Abbotsford BMX Supercross being the first major BMX event after the Olympic Games, we expect a fantastic showdown between the very best as well as great interest from media and fans around the world” continued Lindstrom.

This year marks the inaugural season of the BMX Canada Cup. In total, young riders from Canada will have the chance to race in five races, including three international UCI races.

Adam Muys, head coach of the Canadian BMX program in Canada, is excited about the new series and the opportunities it will bring to BMX riders in Canada: “This new series is going to allow young riders to progress and bridge the gap between provincial racing and national racing. That bridge is a critical component that will ensure Canada has long term planned success around the world.”

“We have a great talent pool in development right now all across the country, a potential that is currently untapped. Uniting as a community is critical in the success of the BMX Canada Cup Series, and we are looking forward to see riders coming together and embrace the series, and make it their own as the series grow.”

The BMX Canada Cup Series is a vital part of the Long Term Athlete Development model for BMX, which was presented to the community last year after an exhaustive collaboration and input from Provincial Sport Organizations, coaches, riders and parents in Canada.

Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC, Canada’s most prolific BMX rider and top-ranked Canadian of the World ranking, shares his excitement with Muys. “The more racing opportunities there are in Canada, the better it is for the sport and its growth. This series will provide awesome opportunities for the new generation of riders to race on the international scene, without having to travel extensively to the United States or oversees. I’m looking forward to race some of these events.”

The 2012 BMX Canada Cup Series will consist of five events over three weekends of racing. Each weekend will consist of one internationally sanctioned race (UCI) and one nationally sanctioned race (CCA).

The 2012 Series will begin in Quebec in July with two events, then move to Alberta in late August for two additional events. The Series will conclude in Abbotsford with the Canada Cup Finals, the day after the 2012 BMX Canadian Championships in September.

The Canada Cup Series racing will feature many racing categories, such as Senior Men and Women, Junior Men and Women, as well as Development Men and Women (14-16 years old).

Canada Cup events will be run in conjunction with provincially sanctioned races allowing for all categories to be run.

A full season ranking will be maintained for the six Canada Cup Categories. Rankings will be posted on the Canadian Cycling Association website on the Tuesday following each event. There will be prizing for the series overall ranking. The Current Leader will be awarded a leader’s plate to wear at the next race. Points will be awarded based on the final results of each day of racing. The overall ranking will be calculated using each athletes best four of five races. It is mandatory to attend the final event in order to have an overall ranking.

NEW DATE FOR OPENING EVENT
There are a few modified dates for the 2012 Canada Cup Series kick-off event in Québec City, it is now scheduled for June 30 and July 1.
